ORT Opening Event, Sunday, September 9
With white gloves and hats, members enjoyed Southern hospitality, delicious food, beautiful weather, and lively conversation.

Rabbi Robert Levy, shown left, was the keynote speaker and shared tales of visiting Jewish congregations in the South as he biked through Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi.

Bagels & Grits: In Mom’s Kitchen Down South
Recipes compiled and described by Eileen Thacker

                                           
 Pimento Cheese Spread with assorted crackers 

(A truly distinctive Southern spread of sharp cheddar cheese,
Pimentos, green pepper, onions and cream cheese)

 Bell Pepper Frittata 

(A South Carolina favorite of purple onions, colorful bell peppers, squash, zucchini, mushrooms, 
eggs, bread cubes, cream cheese and Swiss coming together in a springform pan)

Tomato Tart

(Plum tomatoes, fresh basil, onions, eggs, Monterey Jack Cheese and Parmesan Cheese in a flaky pie crust)

Garden Succotash 

(A Southern warm side dish of lima beans, fresh corn kernels, and fresh chopped tomatoes 
seasoned with fresh parsley and chopped fresh chives)

Corn Pudding 

(Corn is a Southern staple and creatively turned into a pudding made with creamed corn,
eggs, corn kernels, sour cream, cornbread muffin mix and butter)

Sauteed Kale 

(Oh so Southern--and nutritious. Kale is lighted sauteed in olive oil with some chopped onion and garlic then a touch of crushed red pepper)

Fried Green Tomatoes 

(Green tomatoes thickly sliced, dipped in an egg batter, then coated with white corn meal & flour than fried until golden brown)

Southern Cheesy Grits 

(A definite MUST for breakfast, consisting of grits, eggs, sour cream, variety of cheese and butter)

“Smashed” Potatoes 

(Crispy oven baked red potatoes leave fried potatoes in the dust!)

Sweet Tea Rice with Peaches & Pecans 

 (Peaches, pecans, and fresh chives flavor long grain white rice)

 Upgraded Layered Salad 

(Fresh spinach and watercress are paired with mushrooms, scallions, tomatoes and peas
dressed with parsley garlic sour cream and mayonnaise)

Pineapple and Raisins Southern Coleslaw 

(Crushed pineapple & golden raisins add an exotic touch to this coleslaw)

Peanut Butter Bread with Strawberry Jam
